The Brief

The brief was to develop a modern, flexible multisite network for ISRP, enabling regional administrators to independently manage their content, members, language, currency, and payments while maintaining a unified brand identity.

The work involved:

  • Joomla website upgrade: Their existing site was on Joomla 3 and needed to be migrated to a later version of Joomla.   It was the ideal time to review other platforms to see if there was a better option to support their global organisation.
  • Membership management: This needed to be streamlined, allowing regions more autonomy with their own lists but also keeping the top level management of the lists.
  • Regional variations: Each region had their own preferences and legal obligations that meant the site needed to have flexibility for areas including:  subscriptions, payments, types of memberships, GDPR
  • Search engine optimisation: Improved search engine indexing for their documents to help more people discover their extensive journals.
  • Content access: Creating a secure and intuitive system for members to access both paid and free content.
  • Multi-language functionality: Implementing the ability to serve their global membership in multiple languages.

Technology

The ISRP's migration to a WordPress multisite network has greatly improved website management and user experience. WordPress provides a user-friendly platform that streamlines content updates and enhances collaboration among global contributors.

The multisite structure, featuring a central site with country subsites, allows for automatic language translation (with admin control) and enables admins to broadcast news across the network, all served by a convenient network-wide search.

Integrating the ISRP Journal as a subsite ensures consistent branding, centralised management, and a unified user experience across the entire network. Content, members, and documents were easily migrated from the previous system.

To improve discoverability and reach a wider audience, the new website will prioritise search engine optimization (SEO). This involved implementing SEO best practices, optimising metadata, and ensuring proper indexing by search engines.

Membership System

The membership management system has been significantly updated to comply with current bylaws, giving sections greater autonomy in member recruitment and management.

  • Group membership accounts for organisations, allowing them to invite individuals to create their own membership accounts linked to the group.
  • A members-only document library with downloadable PDFs and Word files, along with simple administration for uploading new documents.
  • An opt-in members' directory where members can choose to list their contact details for other members to view.
  • Each section's admin has full control over their own specific online/offline payment providers and their membership levels and subscribers. Each section can set its own currency and pricing for membership levels.
  • The system allows for offline payments and online payments via Stripe and PayPal, with a facility for admins to approve membership applications for offline payments.
  • An automatic invoice PDF is sent by email for both online and offline payments. A three-month grace period allows members to retain their membership if it is not renewed by the due date.

Events Management

The website now features a robust events management system, including an events calendar and tools for event registration and bookings. Members and non-members can register at different price levels, with payments handled seamlessly via Stripe and PayPal.

Custom Coding / Integrations

The ISRP Journal was added as a site to the WordPress multisite network. This provided centralised management, consistent branding, and a unified user experience. As the Journal will transition to Scholastica in the future, we used DOCman for the current Journal site without customisations for metadata indexing or Scholastica integration.
