Wordpress 7

WordPress Armstrong - Are you ready to embrace the power

WordPress officially released its latest version: WordPress 7.0. Named after Louis Armstrong, the jazz legend known for his musical improvisation. This legacy mirrors the upgrade, a new native AI core that transforms WordPress from a rigid platform to one capable of creative and automated workflows.

As a zero point upgrade, this marks more than a security patch or a minor layout tweak. Arguably this is the most groundbreaking upgrade WordPress has ever done. 7.0 includes AI capabilities within the core infrastructure level that fundamentally changes how the data is automated and processed. Previously much of this AI capability was set up using plugins, APIs or third party platforms.

As your digital agency partner, we are already managing the upgrade process for our client websites. Here is a transparent breakdown of what WordPress 7.0 is, how it affects your business, the pros and cons, and, importantly - our agency’s stance on these new features.

Has WordPress built its own proprietary AI model?

No, WordPress 7.0 does not have its own AI model, but it has built a new infrastructure within its core that is designed to connect with the external AI platform of your choice. You will find this on the new ‘Connectors’ page where you can link with three of the major AI platforms; Open AI, Anthropic and Google using secure API keys.

What happens when you upgrade my WordPress to 7.0? I don't want AI messing with my data or scraping my business information. How do I avoid this?

When we upgrade your website to WordPress 7.0, nothing happens automatically. In fact, we switch this feature off by default until you can confirm that the ability to integrate an AI with your website meets with your privacy policy requirements, and of course that you actually want that capability. No connections are made unless an administrator manually goes to Settings - Connectors and pastes in an API key. Out of the box, the AI capability does not have access to your website.

How will it change my website?

For your everyday website visitors, the front-facing website will remain the same, though they will likely notice faster page load speeds due to under-the-hood performance optimisations.

The upgrade includes a modernised editing experience, with changes to the WordPress dashboard including:

  • A modernised dashboard: The admin area has been visually overhauled with improved spacing, cleaner typography, and an app-like interface that makes managing pages and posts much more fluid.
  • Improved UX with a Command Palette: Using these commands; Ctrl+K (Windows) or ⌘K (Mac), you can now trigger a global search bar to instantly jump between pages, edit settings, or find content without endless clicking.
  • Flexible display options: You can visually hide or display specific sections of a page depending on whether a visitor is on a mobile phone or a desktop, without needing custom coding.
  • Visual revision history: WordPress 7.0 introduces a colour-coded ‘video-style’ timeline. You can scroll back through previous versions of a page, see exactly what it looked like visually, and restore a past save with one click.

What about the AI Upgrades - how will these benefit my website?

There are many use case scenarios that this upgrade will have. Whilst much of this we could set up on your site previously, it involved more coding and third party plugins. Easy off the shelve functionality that you will benefit from straight if you utilise the AI Connections includes:

  • Streamline Content Tasks: Metadata and Alt Text Summaries can now be generated natively helping you speed up the process of content creation. We recommend you use the 80-20 rule for this. AI is ideal for doing the routine bulk of your sites pages, but for your high-converting powerful landing pages you will still need keyword research, a tailored SEO strategy and human overview. This can be run retrospectively to help clean up legacy content and media.  You can also utilise the AI to analyse the reading level and tone of your blog posts, offering instant suggestions to make the content more engaging.
  • Scaling up for Ecommerce: If you run an ecommerce business and have hundreds or even thousands of products, an AI connected plugin could save you weeks of manual copywriting. From technical specs, FAQs to instantly drafting unique and compelling content descriptions. These can be set so they are AI created, but set for human review before publishing if required.
  • Building on and Improving your Workflow: We can set up systems that remove the need for old manual ways of working on your site. Imagine typing into your secure AI chat tool “Set up a 20% off flash sale for [product] from now until Sunday at midnight. Include a banner on the website homepage to promote the sale and create an email in [email marketing platform] for our subscriber list. Get sign-off via the email before pushing each stage live”
  • On-the-Fly Media Generation:  No more endless searching through your media archives or paying for expensive stock imagery subscriptions. With the native AI functionality, you can generate high-quality visuals right inside your dashboard. For example, following on from our flash sale example above, you could simply type: “Create 5 photorealistic images of [product] being used by people in different real-world situations, automatically compressed and ready to publish on the website e-commerce page and promotional email.”
  • Personalised Calls-to-Action: Improving your calls-to-action (CTAs) is one of the most effective ways to boost online sales. Using the built in AI connections you can automatically change the wording of a landing page's CTA in real time, showing one tailored message to a returning corporate client, and a completely different one to a first-time small business visitor.

Does the new WordPress AI capability pose a security risk to my website and data?

Out of the box, no. WordPress 7.0 is not a security risk to your website and data. It uses a security framework called the Model Context Protocol (MCP), which acts like a secure "USB-C port" for artificial intelligence built directly into your website's core code. Instead of relying on a potentially messy, unsecure web of third-party plugins that could leak information, this built-in architecture establishes strict boundaries. It forces external AI tools (like ChatGPT or Google Gemini) to operate inside a locked digital "waiting room." The AI is only permitted to see the exact piece of text or image you ask it to review, completely blocking it from accessing your backend code, private business files, or sensitive customer databases.

WordPress 7.0: Do I need to upgrade?

Yes we recommend you upgrade. The latest version will improve many things for your website with the improved dashboard, speed and the potential to utilise AI connections in a secure and streamlined environment. Upgrading to a major framework version guarantees your business stays competitive and secure.  The upgraded platform also features more native features, such as breadcrumbs, built-in gallery lightboxes etc. This will allow us to strip away any clunky, third-party plugins, which will lower your security risk and keep your site lightweight and fast.

Do I need to update my website Privacy Policy when I upgrade to WordPress 7.0?

It depends on how you use the new tools:

  • If we leave the Connectors settings blank, WordPress 7.0 will not transmit any data at all, meaning no changes to your legal terms are required out of the box.
  • There is no need to update if you are using the AI tools for creative tasks, for example, generating images, writing blogs, or summarising content and do not collect or store user data on the website. In this example, you are not transmitting any user data. Your privacy policy can remain exactly as it is.
  • Updating your privacy policy is needed if you give the AI tools access to any of your user data. The moment you grant the AI access to sensitive customer data, for example, your WooCommerce customer sales figures, you are transferring data to a third party. Under strict privacy laws like the UK GDPR, you are then legally obligated to update your privacy policy to disclose exactly what data is being shared, how it is being used, and which AI platforms are receiving it.

Will this update clash with my website's existing custom features?

Because WordPress 7.0 updates how websites process information under the hood, some older custom features, themes, or outdated plugins built years ago might not be fully compatible with the new system. We manage this proactively behind the scenes by testing your site first. If we find any older features that need adjustments, we will reach out to you directly to explain what is required to ensure a smooth, seamless transition.

What are the disadvantages of upgrading to WordPress 7.0

Major upgrades always come with transitional hurdles including conflicts with old themes, plugins and bespoke code. At Channel we work carefully on these upgrades to ensure there are no issues that will affect your website performance.

Our Agency Policy: We Are Keeping AI Disabled by Default

Because we prioritise your brand security, data integrity, and legal compliance above tech industry trends, our agency is disabling the new native AI connectors by default during this upgrade cycle. Here is why we are taking this cautious, deliberate approach:

  • Data Protection: We want to ensure that no proprietary business data, customer forms, or internal content are accidentally scraped or sent to public AI training models without your explicit consent.
  • Brand Control: Generative AI tools can occasionally introduce ‘hallucinations’ or off-brand messaging. We believe your public-facing content should always be guided by human hands.
  • Legal Safeguards: Keeping it disabled by default means you do not need to rush out emergency rewrites of your legal terms and privacy policies.

Can we turn it on?

Absolutely. If your team wants to actively utilise the new core AI features for content generation or workflow automation, let us know. We will gladly schedule a consultation to set up a secure, private API connection, audit the security boundaries, and help guide you through the necessary privacy policy updates.

Appendix

What is an API?: An API (Application Programming Interface) is a secure digital bridge that allows different software applications to communicate and exchange data with one another. It enables one system to request specific information or actions from another automatically, ensuring safe integration without exposing underlying code or private databases.

A good analogy is to think of an API like a waiter taking your order to the kitchen, then bringing your food out to you. The waiter (API) takes what you asked for from a menu to the kitchen, the kitchen staff prepare and cook your food without you having to go to the kitchen or even having to know anything at all about cooking, then the waiter returns with your food.
